Portland in top 10 for using renewable energy

SustainLane Government is a Web site of San Francisco-based SustainLane (sustainlane.us), an Internet and media company dedicated to encouraging consumers, businesses and government to go green.

SustainLane surveyed the 50 largest U.S. cities to determine what percentage of each city's electricity comes from renewable sources such as solar, wind, geothermal and small-scale hydro energy. Oakland, Calif., led the nation with 17 percent of its electricity produced by renewable energy sources; the Bay Area city gets some of its wind energy power from one of the largest wind power generating facilities in the nation at nearby Altamont Pass.

San Francisco, Sacramento and San Jose tied for second with 12 percent of their electricity coming from renewable energy sources.

Portland came in third, with 10 percent.

The other leading cities include: Boston, 8.6 percent; San Diego, 8 percent; Austin, 6 percent; Los Angeles, 5 percent; Minneapolis, 4.5 percent; Seattle, 3.5 percent; and Chicago, 2.5 percent.
