Exploring Solar Power: A New Tool to Evaluate Solar Panel Potential

Several Illinois residents have had positive experiences with solar power after investing in solar panels on their properties. Suraiya Mansuri from Skokie and Thomas O’Donnell from Portage Park shared how solar energy saved them money and helped them reduce their environmental impact.

Mansuri, a lover of the outdoors, installed solar panels in her backyard. Along with other environmentally-friendly decisions like reusing rainwater, the panels significantly reduced her energy bill, saving her $100 in July 2023 compared to July 2022.

O’Donnell, a chef committed to sustainability, also decided to go solar for his home. He saw a drastic decrease in his monthly bill, from around $200 to just $13, attributing the savings to his solar panels.

However, solar power may not be suitable for every home. Factors such as the age of the roof and shade from surrounding trees should be considered. To help consumers evaluate the feasibility of solar panels, ComEd (Commonwealth Edison) offers an online solar calculator. By inputting information about energy usage and future power needs, users can get an estimate of the potential benefits of solar power.

According to Justin Hollister, ComEd’s solar interconnection manager, the upfront cost may deter some individuals. However, there are options available such as working with a developer or taking out a loan. Hollister explained that at least 60% of the upfront cost can be recovered through federal tax credits and rebates, with homeowners expected to recoup their investment within 7 to 8 years.

Maintenance costs are another aspect to consider, with both Mansuri and O’Donnell expecting to spend a few hundred dollars every few years.

In addition to purchasing solar panels, other options for accessing renewable energy include leasing solar panels or subscribing to a community solar farm.

To learn more about solar energy and evaluate its potential for your home or business, visit ComEd’s website and utilize their solar calculator.
