Algeria in talks with Desertec over solar power projects

ALGIERS- Algeria has started talks with the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) to launch solar power projects in the North African country, Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab said on Thursday.

OPEC member and gas exporter Algeria last month announced plans to set up photovoltaic solar plants worth $3.2 billion to $3.6 billion to produce electricity for the local market and export the surplus.

The goal is to maintain its exports of gas which is currently used to produce 98% of total power output, amid a growing domestic demand.

“This is part of the national strategy for energy transition,” Arkab told parliament.

Algeria has been trying to cope with financial pressure after a fall in global crude oil prices pushed down its energy export revenue, the main source of state finances.
