AES Distributed Energy to develop 2 solar-plus-storage projects in Hawaii

AES Distributed Energy, part of US utility AES Corp (NYSE:AES), on Monday said it has been chosen to develop two projects that combine solar power and energy storage on Hawaii’s island Oahu.

Hawaiian Electric Company earlier this month selected projects for the generation of 460 MW of solar power and close to 3 GWh of energy storage on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island as part of its transition to using 100% renewable power by 2045.

The first project to be developed by AES DE will include 19.5 MW of solar power generation and a 35-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), while the second one will include a 60-MW photovoltaic (PV) system with a 240-MWh BESS. The projects’ capacity is given in direct current (DC).

Together, the two projects will produce 137,000 MWh of power, enough to supply over 23,000 homes. Construction is due to begin in 2022, subject to receiving all necessary permits and approvals, with completion expected in 2023.

AES DE at present operates over 50 MW of solar and solar-plus-storage facilities across Hawaii.
