Brazil’s Northeast hits 7th record in 2020 with 1,465 MW of peak solar

Solar farms in the Brazilian Northeast recorded peak generation of 1,465 MW on March 28, at 0958 local time, for a new regional record, the National Electric System Operator (ONS) announced on Friday.

This is the 7th time the region broke its generation record this year alone and the second for March, which previously registered 1,378 MW on March 6. The other records were in February — 1,357 MW, 1,330 MW, 1,325 MW and 1,257 MW  — and on January 16 with 1,232 MW of peak generation.

According to data from ONS, the volume produced by photovoltaic (PV) farms accounted for 17.4% of the region’s load when the record was set.

When it comes to the average solar generation throughout the day, another record was broken with 496 average megawatts (MWa) produced. This amount corresponds to a 5.4% participation in the Northeast’s load. The previous record was 471 MWa, set on February 11, 2020.
