Voltalia seals solar power supply contract with Braskem in Brazil

French renewables company Voltalia SA (EPA:VLTSA) has inked a 20-year solar power sale contract with Brazilian thermoplastic resin producer Braskem (BVMF:BRKM5) concerning a portion of the output of two solar parks totalling 270 MW.

Specifically, the contract is tied to the Solar Serra do Mel (SSM) 1 and 2 project, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. These photovoltaic (PV) plants are expected to become the largest under the company’s portfolio.

With the new contract in place, construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2020, with commissioning projected for the first half of 2022, Voltalia said on Monday.

According to the company, a 32-MW portion of SSM 1 and 2 was negotiated with domestic energy distributors at the October 2019 energy auction. The remaining 238 MW were sold under private contracts with companies such as Braskem and the state-owned Companhia Paranaense de Energia (BVMF:CPLE6), better known as Copel.

Part of Voltalia’s Serra Branca cluster, made up of both wind and solar projects, SSM 1 and 2 will be able to negotiate new short or long-term private power sales contracts once the current deals end, Voltalia noted.
