Japan's Chugoku Electric said Tuesday it plans to upgrade the 350 MW No 1 fuel oil-fired unit at its Tamashima power plant in western Japan so that it will be able to burn gas as well by April 2014 — in a bid to diversify its fuel procurement needs.
The upgrade work will begin in June, with the No. 1 unit set to be shut completely from October this year to April 2014, a company official said.
Chugogku Electric plans to get gas via the Mizushima LNG terminal, which it operates in a 50:50 joint venture with JX Nippon Oil & Energy, the company said.
