First Solar scoops Catalina PV supply agreement

First Solar is to supply PV modules for the first phase of a 110MW solar development in California, the scheme's developer announced on Wednesday.
EnXco, which is owned by the renewables arm of French utility EDF, has signed an agreement for First Solar to deliver 61MW of thin film modules to EnXco's Catalina Solar Project in Kern County, California, starting in September 2012.
The agreement covers the first 60MW phase of development at Catalina Solar, due to be completed by the end of 2012. The second phase, which will add an additional 50MW, is expected to come online in June 2013. A supplier for the second phase has yet to be announced.

"We are pleased to enter into this agreement with First Solar to supply a portion of the Catalina Solar Project," said Kristina Peterson, vice president, Solar Business Unit for enXco. "First Solar has been and continues to be a good partner. Their technology remains one of the lowest LCOE solar PV solutions."

Arizona-based First Solar has previously worked with Enxco parent company EDF Energies Nouvelles in France on plans to build a 100MW solar manufacturing plant in the Bordeaux town of Blanquefort.

"First Solar has a long-standing relationship with EDF Energies Nouvelles and we're excited to extend this to the United States with enXco," said Dana Diller, First Solar Vice President for U.S. Business Development. "We're pleased to be a part of the Catalina Solar Project and playing a role in its success as well as helping California reach its renewable energy goals."

EnXco started life as a developer of large-scale wind projects throughout the US. However, the company has diversified in recent years, and its portfolio today includes solar, biogas, and biomass.
